For my sixth Dream Gardens podcast, I interviewed historian and author Priya Chhaya about Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It is a historical children’s novel about a young girl living in German occupied Denmark in 1943. She finds herself unexpectedly thrown into the dangerous world of the underground resistance when her Jewish friend’s family must escape to Switzerland before they are rounded up by Nazi soldiers. For this fifth Dream Gardens podcast I interviewed author, speaker, teacher and consultant Erin Brown about the science fiction middle grade novel The Tripod Trilogy by John Christopher. Consisting of three books – The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, and The Pool of Fire – the trilogy  is set in a dystopian future and tells the story of a young boy, Will Parker, and his battle against an army of tripods that have conquered not only the Earth but also the minds of his fellow human beings. In lieu of an interview, this Dream Gardens podcast is a book spotlight of the middle grade novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, a semi-autobiographical tale of a young Vietnamese refugee girl and her adjustment to the loss of her homeland and her father, as well as her struggles to negotiate through the strangeness and occasional hostility of her new American home.
